Rewards and Recognition
We recognize outstanding sustainability performance through our annual Sustainable Intelligence (SI) awards. Peer nominations are submitted and winners are selected by our Sustainability Steering Committee.
This year’s awards go to RBC WaterPark Place (Office) and Lakeside Place (Residential) for Property of the Year and to Kristian Valmeo for Star of the Year.
SI Property of the Year
This award is given to the property or properties with the most outstanding achievement or overall performance, consistent with Oxford’s Sustainable Intelligence performance indicators.
RBC WaterPark Place has achieved an Energy Star score of 100 – a distinction that has never been achieved in an office building of this size in Canada and an unheard-of energy performance – 12 equivalent kilowatt hours per square foot, which is 43% lower than the Toronto office building average and 52% lower than the national industry average. This makes the building the most energy efficient large office building in Ontario.
The building is focused on occupant engagement and satisfaction – the base building has also installed leading-edge smart and connected technologies, including a digital metering and sub-metering system allowing tenants to manage their consumption effectively.
The team has presented an overwhelming capacity to attract and retain the best customers, to build a strong relationship with its largest tenant, RBC, and to work on projects that enhance their employee comfort and achieve their corporate goals of being a leader in sustainability. Through this relationship, the building introduced daytime cleaning, a comprehensive recycling program, and the launch of a tenant energy consumption dashboard portal.
Lakeside Place delivered on Oxford’s commitment to sustainability in 2016 by implementing two key energy savings initiatives. The team executed an intricate auto transformer project (Harmonizer) which safely reduces the building's extra voltage while keeping within the standard industry specifications. This unique project was a first at Oxford and has reduced the site’s annual electrical consumption by 314,000 kilowatt-hours over one year! This translated into $40,000 in cost savings, all of which were achieved with no negative or noticeable impact on the residents.
Furthermore, the site implemented a number of sweeping light upgrades where dated units were replaced with high efficient LED fixtures en masse and replaced all exterior light standards, tower stairwells and utility room lights. The site saves 40,000 kWh annually and also benefits by having brighter spaces.
Both of these challenging projects were implemented in a truly professional manner utilizing a customer service approach and have a combined payback period of approximately five years.
SI Star of the Year
This award recognizes an individual within Oxford who has made an outstanding personal commitment to the principles and goals of Oxford’s Sustainable Intelligence program.
Kristian is a champion for sustainability when it comes to procurement. Through his efforts, 100% of Oxford’s paper is sourced from responsibly managed or “FSC certified” sources, plastic water bottles and other non-recyclables have been eliminated from Oxford’s kitchens and meeting rooms, and a sustainable catering option for meetings at Head Office was implemented. Through ongoing work with Grand & Toy, he continues to educate users at Head Office and across the portfolio to select alternative green options when making purchases, which has resulted in Oxford being an industry leader with a total of 40% of our spend containing sustainable content for our office supplies and a reduction of overall purchases by 15%. Through his passion and strong dedication for sustainability, Oxford received Grand & Toy’s first ever Leadership in Greener Purchasing Award for the Real Estate and Construction Industry, among only 15 winners out of 500 organizations.
